The President of the Italian Republic

July 1, 2022

H.E. Mary May Simon Governor General of Canada OTTAWA

On the occasion of Canada’s national day, I wish to extend to you, Governor General, and to all Canadian citizens, the sincere congratulations of the Republic of Italy, together with my best wishes.

This year we celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Italy, established in October 1947. The historic bond between our two countries and peoples is characterized by a strong friendship rooted in the shared values of freedom, peace, democracy, and justice. It is nurtured by continuous and fruitful social and cultural exchange, and by the contribution of the large and industrious community of Italian origin.

Our relations are enriched by our effective collaboration in all major multilateral forums, where we work together to provide human rights, social progress, and truly sustainable global development.

We share a commitment to security, to peaceful coexistence, and to the rules-based international order; a commitment that is ever more determined and important in the current grave context of Russian aggression in Ukraine.

It is my most sincere wish that Ottawa and Rome may continue to develop their precious and effective cooperation in all areas and forums of mutual interest.

In this spirit, may I offer you and the Canadian people warmest wishes on Canada Day —Fete du Canada and on the important anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Sergio Mattarella
